A delicate noise, a breathing, like a mountain passage looped through a thousand delay pedals with the bass removed, flutters. Cables hook around the rocks, insulation chewed & partially rotten, copper strands oxidising on contact with the salt in the air. A pub once leant against the slope, not that you’d expect it from these remains. Among the ruins, her faded photograph clings to a baroque frame : Miss Ethel Matthews had some time in Paris, coyly granting interviews in hotel lifts while shopping. A delicate bass note vibrating from a helicopter overhead : Ten thousand frequencies beyond hearing, droning in sympathetic resonance, travel for a second along your jaw. A glass, distressed & cracked, scatters its splinters. The ocean’s crawl, long departed, gradually prepares the ground, to come again. Ethel was much loved in her day, & admired. Chickweed surges among & between discarded brass fittings on the grass. You find such interpolations despicable

a white wind
whirlwind
an annihilation
a scorching violent tearing
dust devils through
seconds appearing
clearing a path a sunlight calm
& clear projected
rippled peaks refracting
against a flatness
framed & coalescing
syllables fixed

a vacillation

what was once a battlefield has
become a peaceful public park
on a pleasant Sunday afternoon
& Saturday we walked to Victoria Park & tried to fly
our kites
part-shaded from the heat east of the fountain & south
of the lake there wasn’t much
wind to speak of so we wound back
circling up
to Gosset Street but
tastes change & no-one cares for that farshlaft clerk
Kafka any more least of all me not
when the gayst of Groucho Marx whistles through Lexington falling
down to 8th Street trailing
the Upper East Side in its tails never still always
wandering waving unlit cigars at Litvaks
& cabbage head syntax :
a cold & ill-
fitting room should
never be suffered without a shawl without
the katan of a brother like Harpo
who speaks
how we imagine angels do with mouth-sewn liberation with
the joy
of tangerines the tears the joy
of cakelight flowing into eight-year olds bursting expectant
wonder-eyed impatient launched
at the table struggling for the first
tongueful unfamiliar
forbidden by Shas before we wake holding
not hand-knotted fringes but kite-rope
dragging loosened soles out the door
pig bone buried in flesh treyf the pink silhouette
of a kite-line hooked & frayed
across a pale [Bessarabian]
burnt hillside

Changeling Verse Carved in a Tree
—
were the bedclothes lined with silt when
mother dug you like crop from the shore
did she trace the
line of your sickness, was it
so far you had to crawl, did she kiss
prayers into damp linen, did she kneel
to a cross, brush
moist scrag from your hair, did
the neighbours wake to
drowned chickens, did their scissors
steal your voice in the woods, did you slip
free the dark naked ache of childhood, is this why
we forget
all those bones we boiled for your name

Jonah Assembles His Notes On The Congress of Vienna of 1815
i.
Disappointment is a curiously English word. Density obscures meaning : by or in presents as innocuous choice ; the diet of the body, the stomach of a Confederation, our desire for sweet mess and undesirable elements ; cold, unstuck bowels, up to our necks in frustration.
ii.
We place words besides ourselves to enjoy sifting sweet mess from what is read as unwanted directed by who? to pick at sections of peristaltic tract. Freud ever hovers over our table. This violence of language, this exchange of diverse interests, falls inverse to the language of violence.
iii.
Did I tell you… Five years ago. I experienced Malden Road in Chalk Farm, London as a Rose. Was I by this contusion or in it, I could not reliably say, except for pavement slabs, recessed concrete benches under a housing block, the yellow halogen bannersign over the entrance to the Mamara twenty-four hour supermarket, and advancing cubes of blue moontime air indistinguishable from both each other and from a two hundred mile cyclone of pink-edged petals which I attempted to walk, somewhat uncertainly, from The Fiddler’s Elbow to my car. Not that I had been drinking, no ; no alcohol was either by or in me, except, had I been sixteen feet closer to Mamara’s door at that moment these facts could easily although subtly have changed.
iv.
Bodies preserve themselves through prolonged and incremental measures until they expel what they have no use for. But is Sigmund by us, as a scent of accompaniment, beside, alongside, with, retrojectively summoned against rejection ; or, in, wafted through air, an inflection, or incursion, introjected viral load of brain, an assimilated infestation, of bearded odd little man?
v.
In English professional circles, Disappointed is often used in an unconscious extension of its etymology from the frustration of expectations to mean a synonym of I will respond with unaccountable cruelty by deniable neglect. If you ask me how I know this, I will distract you with a lie.
vi.
And so, in the body of Europe, manufactured on and in-between the tables of Vienna in 1815. A messy trade-off to eliminate common rules : basic permissions set back by generations. Limited respect for Freud’s antecedents’ future rights in the fresh thirty-six state Confederation bargained and revised away to those already chosen by each nation. If you ask me how I know this, I will tell you uncomfortable facts about legislative power and the landscapes of tiny words.
vii.
Disappointing, a derivation of the Middle French disappointer, has that strangely English construction.
viii.
Bodies of law live no differently to any other being.
ix.
Whether, in their cold moments, the inhabitants of such small lands are beside themselves or fully alive in themselves : who can you reliably tell.

it is spoken, it says
after a while the pages compact
did you learn how to swim in the sea as a child one push one bite
one mouthful of salt at a time a repeated story turned into splinters
the blood between your teeth runs on for so long in the end what matters
this chair this leg your hand maybe but not our heads this morning where there is both
everything and too little to say could you hold a thought for long enough for
one bite: to suck the jelly out of bones let the birds run free of the shell
to swim in sticky voices or cut the marrow skin: what matters
is this freedom to bathe inside half-closed books of milk of eggs of bone
away from the outrage of bones breaking in the sea or
for what are our bones broken
for who is the breaking done
for the splintered ribs and the image
which is a sea of blood of rivers of blood of blood striped faces
propped up in the sea what matters is one push away from whatever platitude
you will use to sleep tonight which is whatever the sea demands: one bite one push
towards land a compact fantasy well make us strong enough
to resist the sea to cut the skin still breathing and swallow

feedback beyond the planets a recurring daydream
of drifting across a freeport unrestrained & only my luggage
gets lost i need more than five seconds more
time to choose which problem cardiac arrest
killed Smith & Tyner at the end what solution was
that Coltrane’s India coming together between the nodes
a shower might unsettle this exhaustion free Rama Lama why
can’t i be a man for you baby Rama Lama why this space
so cold why aurora black coffee
